Learn the Power of Mapping and AI at UTC’s GIS Day Workshop on Nov 19

The Center for Applied Geospatial Data Science (CAGDS) at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga (UTC) is hosting a free workshop on the occasion of GIS Day to introduce the power of geographic information systems (GIS). The workshop will take place on Nov. 19 from 9–11 a.m. in the Multidisciplinary Research Building and is open to the UTC community and members of the public (though seating and computers are limited).

This year’s theme is geospatial artificial intelligence (geoAI) — the convergence of GIS and AI technologies. Attendees will learn how deep‐learning and remote sensing tools are being used to automate mapping workflows, transforming tasks that once took days or weeks into hours when a model is properly trained. The workshop also emphasizes responsible use of AI-enabled mapping tools, teaching participants about appropriate workflows, rather than simply “playing around” with the latest packages.

The event also provides networking opportunities: a “Mappy Hour” with the Chattanooga GIS Users Group is planned for later in the day at a local brewery to further engage the GIS community.

Why this matters for The Knoxville AI Hub

GIS and geoAI are becoming essential across city planning, public health, business, engineering, and nonprofit work. CAGDS’s focus on AI-powered mapping highlights how valuable spatial data skills are for East Tennessee’s growing tech and innovation ecosystem, helping local communities make smarter, faster, place-based decisions.
