Tennessee Joins Regional AI Policy Caucus to Harmonize State Laws and Economic Strategy

Tennessee has partnered with five other states—Arkansas, Illinois, Louisiana, Ohio, and Oklahoma—to establish the new Heartland AI Policy Caucus. This interstate initiative is designed to foster collaboration on state-level AI policies that will strategically drive economic growth and prepare the regional workforce.

The caucus, which is supported by a grant from Google.org, plans to meet monthly to identify shared legislative priorities and explore model legislation. Key focus areas include using AI to modernize state government systems, promoting AI education, and supporting small businesses in their AI adoption efforts. The goal is to avoid fragmented or conflicting state laws by working together on a practical, unified approach.

This initiative is a response to the rapid increase in AI-related legislation nationwide and is part of a broader strategy by the Heartland Forward organization to boost economic prosperity across the region. By sharing knowledge and resources, Tennessee and its partners aim to ensure the region is a leader, not a follower, in the AI revolution.

Why this matters for The Knoxville AI Hub

This collaborative effort is crucial for Civic Leaders and Public Agencies across Tennessee, ensuring that the state’s AI governance is informed by regional needs and best practices. For Small Businesses and Startups, the potential for harmonized regional laws could simplify AI compliance and regulatory burdens, making it easier to scale operations. The caucus’s explicit focus on workforce preparation will influence state policies that fund and prioritize AI training for Students, Lifelong Learners, and Current Workers.
