Tennessee Senate Moves to Expand State AI Advisory Council

The Tennessee Senate is advancing Bill SB1362, which would expand the Tennessee Artificial Intelligence Advisory Council from 24 members to as many as 27. The bill also updates the legal definition of “artificial intelligence” to ensure state laws keep up with how fast the technology is changing.
The Council is currently tasked with figuring out how AI will affect Tennessee’s economy, jobs, and privacy. By adding more members, the state hopes to bring in additional expertise from local universities and businesses to help guide the ethical use of AI in government services.
This move comes shortly after the state released its “Action Plan,” which focuses on building secure computer infrastructure and training state employees to use AI tools safely. The bill passed its second consideration in early February and is now moving through the committee process.
Why this matters for The Knoxville AI Hub
For civic leaders and public agencies in Knox County, this expansion means more representation and a more robust “watchdog” for AI policy. It ensures that as the state government begins to use AI for things like social services or road maintenance, there is a diverse group of experts making sure it is done fairly and transparently.
