UT Knoxville Hosts Global “Hack the Microscope” AI Event

From December 16-18, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, hosted the second annual “Hack the Microscope” event. This hybrid hackathon brought together researchers, students, and data scientists from nearly 20 sites worldwide, including participants in Europe, Singapore, and India.

The event focused on the intersection of artificial intelligence and microscopy. Teams competed to develop AI tools that can better analyze the vast amounts of data generated by modern electron microscopes. By automating the analysis of atomic-level images, these new AI tools help material scientists discover new compounds for batteries, electronics, and manufacturing much faster than before.

Why this matters for The Knoxville AI Hub

This event positions UTK as a global node for “AI for Science,” offering students direct access to international peers and top-tier recruiters. It highlights a growing trend where coding skills are just as important as lab skills in fields like biology and materials science.
