U.S. Department of Labor Launches ‘Make America AI-Ready’ Initiative

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) officially announced the “Make America AI-Ready” initiative today. This program is designed to provide accessible, foundational knowledge about artificial intelligence to the American workforce. The goal is to ensure that workers across all industries understand how AI functions and how it might impact their specific jobs and career paths.
To make the learning process as easy as possible, the initiative uses a text-based delivery system. Workers can sign up for the free AI literacy course by texting the word “READY” to 20202. This approach is intended to bypass the need for expensive hardware or high-speed internet, making tech education available to anyone with a basic mobile phone.
This initiative follows a broader federal push to address the rapid integration of AI in the workplace. By focusing on “AI literacy”, the basic understanding of what AI is and what it isn’t, the DOL hopes to reduce anxiety surrounding automation and empower employees to use these new tools to their advantage.
Why this matters for The Knoxville AI Hub
While a text-message course won’t turn someone into an AI expert overnight, we see this as a valuable low-barrier entry point:
1) It’s a non-intimidating way to start the journey.
2) It’s very accessible (no high-speed internet required, just a phone).
3) It’s a good “intro” tool we can recommend to neighbors who are curious but overwhelmed by AI.
Does a text-based course go deep enough to change how we work? Probably not. But as a way to demystify the tech for the “everyday” worker, it’s a step in the right direction. This initiative is a win for East Tennessee’s workforce and community members, particularly for small business employees, seniors, and lifelong learners who may feel overwhelmed by the “AI revolution.”
